A46 Widmerpool to Newark Dualling

The Brief

Practicality Brown were asked to plan and execute site clearance works on the A46 between Widmerpool and Newark. The scheme involved the dualling of 25km of a live and busy A-road, and was to be constructed within a limited timescale to meet various milestones.

What we did

  • We mobilised with only a 2 week lead in period and tight deadlines. We provided a team of 6 excavator mounted tree shears, whole tree chippers, timber forwarders, 3 forestry mulchers, 3 crews of experienced tree climbers and chainsaw operators and full time supervision.
  • We were tasked to clear approximately 50km (26kms project length) of hedges and trees along a live and busy A road.
  • The project entailed the mechanised clearance of blocks of trees and individual trees, boundary hedgerows and scrub vegetation over multiple sites to establish the line of the new road
  • To ensure minimal impact, we provided falconry as bird nesting deterrent

The Outcome

After 9 weeks of tree felling, a letter of appreciation was received from the project director:

“I write to thank you on behalf of the Balfour Beatty team for the way you and your people approached the initial site clearance work on the A46 Scheme. The short lead in period and demanding programme was planned with care and executed with real energy.”

Subsequently we were employed to carry out all tree and environmental contracting works over a further 3 year period which included:

  • Tree stump grubbing and mulching
  • Ecology related destructive searches
  • Utility cable clearances
  • Woodland & Hedgerow translocation
  • Off site tree surgery and public rights of way works
