Whittington Heath Golf Course – Lichfield – Vegetation Clearance

The Brief

To clear over 600 oak trees whilst the golf course remained fully open. This clearance was to re-configuration of the golf course as HS2 is cutting directly through the centre of the course.

Working in close collaboration with the grounds staff, club management, their project manager and the course architect we were able to clear all trees and stumps minimising any adverse impact on the club.

What we did

  • Worked in close collaboration with the grounds staff, club management, their project manager to minimise any adverse impact on the club.
  • Worked with our ecological watching brief to avoid disturbing any nesting birds, and with an ecological climbing team who checked trees for bat potential
  • We used a 21T excavator and tree shears, plus chainsaw operatives to undertake the felling.
  • Timber and branches were extracted using our low ground pressure forestry forwarder
  • 300 tonnes of timber was sold within 10 miles of the project
  • 430 tonnes of woodchip was produced from chipping branches using our whole-tree chipper. The chip was removed from site, screened, and dried at our own facilities.  The resulting high-grade chip produced is a British Standard assured product that is sold as biomass fuel.
  • Vegetation and trees were chipped on site using a crane-fed whole-tree chipper. Chippings were removed from site for Biomass..Stumps were grubbed out and mulched to leave a clear site for the golf course contractor.

The Outcome

The works were completed whilst the golf course remained fully open, so minimised impacts to the club.
